Oak Lawn is a village in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is located than 20 miles southwest of Chicago in the north-eastern part of the state.

The area now known as Oak Lawn was bought and sold several times between 1835 and 1859, at which time the recently incorporated government of Worth Township paid for the construction of Black Oak Grove Road. Black Oak was earliest name given to the settlement until 1882 when became known s as Oak Lawn. Businesses, homes and population then increased rapidly and the village gained official incorporation in 1909. On April 21, 1967 Oak Lawn experienced one of the worst tornados to ever strike an urban area. More than 30 lives were lost and about 900 buildings were damaged. The towns rebuild brought a further surge in population and popularity as a commuter town for Chicago workers.

Today residents and visitors to Oak Lawn can enjoy a range of attractions and facilities provided by the Village and surrounding Chicagoland communities. An expansive park system brightens the land and includes over 300 acres of parks, recreational facilities and open land. Facilities include playgrounds, walking paths, baseball fields, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, outdoor swimming pools, an indoor ice arena, two fitness centres, and an 18-hole golf course.

The Children’s Museum strives to empower and engage children, and those who love and care for them, in the joy of learning.
