Palatine is a village in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is residential suburb of Chicago located less than 30 miles north-west of Chicago’s downtown and about 3 miles north-west from Arlington Heights.

Palatine was founded in 1866 by Joel Wood who surveyed and laid out a village around a station on the new Chicago and North Western Railway. In 1911, a short line railroad connected Palatine to neighbouring settlements thus increasing accessibility and popularity. Palanois Park was a small subdivision built shortly after World War II, opening up the area for new residents and Chicago commuters. Rapid growth has been experienced since the 1970s as part of Chicago's growing suburban sprawl. The Palatine downtown area has experienced recent large scale development in the last two decades producing a new passenger train station, extending parking, retail outlets, several new condominiums, homes and commercial buildings.

Palatines ideal location allows both visitors and residents easy access to a plethora of recreational, cultural and business opportunities. The wooded marshland, several streams and close proximity to Lake Michigan offer hiking, off road cycling, boating, fishing and swimming. The Palatine Park District serves 85,000 residents within the Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights, Inverness, Hoffman Estates and Barrington communities. Park operated swimming pools include the Family Aquatic, Birchwood and Eagle Centres, as well as two recreational centres, the Community Centre and Birchwood Centre.

The Village of Palatine plays host to several community events throughout the year including the Downtown Palatine Street Fest, Farmers Markets, 4th of July Festival, Holiday Tree lighting, Hometown Pride and Halloween. The Palatine/Inverness Arts Council support a thriving arts scene in Palatine and Inverness and annually host a juried show called ‘An Art Affair in the Square’.

Attractions in and around Palatine include the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, Arlington Park Race Track, Brookfield Zoo and the Sears Centre Arena.
