Peoria is a city in and the county seat of Peoria County in the state of Illinois. It is located on the Illinois River less than 400 miles north of Springfield and about 160 miles south-west of Chicago.

The area now known as Peoria were first settled in 1680 by French explorers René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and Henri de Tonti. They were responsible for the constructed of Fort Crevecoeur and subsequently Fort Clark. In 1825, the County of Peoria was organized and Fort Clark was officially named Peoria. In 1835 Peoria was incorporated as a village and then ten years later as a city.

Today Peoria is small but diverse city that serves as a regional hub for the primarily rural and agricultural centre of the state. The city’s commerce and urban centre sits on the west shore of the Illinois River. Easy access to both water and rail transportation has created a business and industry concentration in the popular Riverfront District.

Peoria has become famous as a representation of the average American city. This is mainly due to the perceived mainstream Midwestern culture and demographic. Today the question "Will it play in Peoria?" is used to measure if something will appeal to the mainstream public of America.
