Rockford is a city in Winnebago County in the state of Illinois. It is located on both banks of the Rock River in far northern Illinois.

Rockford was first settled in 1834 by Germanicus Kent, Thatcher Blake, and Lewis Lemon. Two settlements formed and shared a name given for the excellent ford across the Rock River. The settlements were incorporated as a village in 1839 and chartered as a city in 1852. Rockford has also been known as the Forest City, due to the surrounding forest areas and massive concentration of elm trees. Sadly an epidemic of Dutch Elm disease destroyed many of these during the 1950s; however Rockford is still heavily decorated with many other varieties. The city today focuses on high-technology businesses, tourism and on-going expansion of the Chicago metropolitan area.

The MetroCentre is a 10,000-seat multi-purpose arena located on the west side of downtown. It opened in 1981 after two years of construction with concerts by Dionne Warwick and The Rolling Stones. The MetroCentre is nicknamed the "Big Orange Box" due to its monochromatic appearance and is used today for sporting and entertainment events.

Rockford has a rich history that has been beautifully preserved through architecture and museums. The Burpee Museum of Natural History is home to Jane, the world's most complete juvenile T. Rex Skeleton. Other facilities include The Discovery Centre Children's Museum, Rockford Art Museum, Tinker Swiss Cottage, Historic Auto Attractions, Erlander Home Museum and Ethnic Heritage Museum.

Rockford hosts several events and festivals through the year. “On the Waterfront” is Illinois' largest outdoor music festival held each Labor Day weekend. The festival features local, regional and national acts on eight different stages. Other events include the Baird Head of the Rock Rowing Regatta, Sock Monkey Madness Festival and Wing Ding. Other attractions in and around the area include The Rockford Ice Hogs of the American Hockey League, Anderson Japanese Gardens, Rock Cut State, Kegel Harley-Davidson dealership, Loves Park, The Rockford Peaches, The Coronado Theatre, Magic Waters Waterpark, Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Gardens.
