Schaumburg is a city in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is located about 30 miles north-west of Chicago and neighboured by Elgin, Des Plains, Hoffman Estates and Roselle.
The first inhabitants of the area now known as Schaumburg were members of the Sauk, Fox, Potawatomi, and Kickapoo Native American tribes. The first settlers arrived in the mid-nineteenth century and included Trumball Kent, Horace Williams, Ernst Schween and German-born Johann Sunderlage. The land was used for farming and as infrastructure and business developed the settlers sent for their family and friends. Schaumburg Township had become completely German by 1870 with the majority of land being owned by German immigrants or their descendants.
Schaumburg was incorporated as a city in 1956 and transformed from a rural community to a suburban metropolis in 1959 when Alfred Campanelli's developed its first large scale suburban-style development. 1971 saw the opening of Woodfield Mall and with it a national recognition as a retail centre. Today's Woodfield Mall is the second-largest mall in America with over 300 stores.
The 1990s saw the addition of many restaurants including a Pizzeria Uno, Outback Steakhouse, Chevy's, P.F. Chang's, Hooters, Red Lobster and Maggiano's. In 1994, the city bought the Schaumburg Regional Airport. Schaumburg is one of nine locations in America to have the dinner theatre chain, Medieval Times.
The spring of 1999 brought baseball to Schaumburg and with it the development of Alexian Field. This 7,000 seat baseball stadium was home to the Schaumburg Flyers, and more recently is home to the Schaumburg Boomers.
The Schaumburg Park District’s Tribute Park at Volkening Lake is a peaceful area that commemorates and honours the memories, special events and achievements of Schaumburg residents and others who make a positive impact on the community. Tribute areas and named bricks are placed throughout walkways and walls of the park highlighting the site’s natural beauty. Other attractions in and around Schaumburg include Olympic park, Walnut Greens Golf Course, Rolling Meadows Ice Arena, Walton Island and the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin.
