Skokie is a village in Cook County in the state of Illinois. It is located about 26 miles north-west of Chicago and bordered by Evanston, Lincolnwood, Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview, and Wilmette. Skokie is also a suburb of Chicago in the scattered metropolis loving named Chicagoland.

Skokie was originally a German-Luxembourger farming community, but was later settled by a sizeable Jewish population. The community was incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888 then renamed "Skokie" in 1940 after the Native American word for "fire". The village's streets are laid out in a standard grid pattern and the diverse population still has a large number of Jewish residents.

The Skokie Park District maintains more than 240 acres of parkland and recreation facilities. A sculpture garden is situated between Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue that displays over 70 sculptures. Just north of this is an impressive statue of Mahatma Gandhi with five of his famous quotations engraved around the base.

The Village of Skokie has made recent significant toward providing convenient and accessible routes for its resident cyclists. Over 45 miles of bike paths and routes trail throughout the community in designated portions of the roadways.

Skokie’s rich Art Community is apparent throughout the Village. Galleries and theatres include the Refuge Art Gallery, North Shore Centre for the Performing and the Skokie Theatre. The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Centre opened in Skokie in 2009. The Centre tells the story of the Holocaust through richly designed, interactive exhibitions that include more than 500 artefacts, documents, and photographs.

Other attractions in and around the area include the Emily Oaks Nature Centre, Exploratorium, the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, Chicago Children's Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry which sits in Hyde Park. Each May the Skokie park district hosts the Skokie Festival of Cultures to celebrate the village's diverse ethnic composition.
