Springfield is a city in and the county seat of Sangamon County in the state of Illinois. It is located in the centre of the state between Jacksonville and Decatur and is the third and current capital of Illinois.
The area that is now known as Springfield was originally settled by trappers and traders who came to benefit from the Sangamon River in 1818. Springfield was first named Calhoun, after Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, but when Senator Calhoun had fallen out of the favour with the public in 1832, the town renamed itself Springfield after Springfield, Massachusetts. Springfield became the third and current capital of Illinois in 1839.
Today the thriving metropolis of Springfield lies on a mostly flat plain in the Lower Illinois River Basin. Lake Springfield is a 4,200-acre man-made reservoir, built and filled in 1935, and is the city’s primarily source of drinking water. Approximately 600,000 people visit the lake each year to enjoy its 57 miles of shoreline, eight public parks and a plethora of water based activities.
Food has a long history in Springfield with many of today’s popular items claiming the city as their place of origin. The alleged first drive-thru window in America is still operating in Springfield at the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop. Other reputable cuisines include the corn dog, once known as the “Cozy Dog,” the horseshoe sandwich, Reisch Beer and many varieties of chilli.
Springfield is historically known best for its most famous past resident, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln lived in Springfield from 1837 until 1861, at which time he moved to the Whitehouse. Tourists come to the area to see and experience the many attractions centred on his life and work. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum features extremely rare artefacts and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site was the place of residence of Lincoln for 17 years and has been beautifully restored to its 1860 appearance. Other Lincoln attractions include the National Historical Park, the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site, the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site, Lincoln Memorial Garden, the Old State Capitol State Historic Site, the Elijah Iles House, Edwards Place and the Lincoln Depot from which Abraham Lincoln departed Springfield to be inaugurated in Washington D.C.
