Anderson is a city in and the county seat of Madison County in the state of Indiana. It is located about 40 miles north-east of Indianapolis in the central part of the state. It is also the principal city of the Anderson, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city gets its name from Chief William Anderson, whose mother was a Delaware Indian and whose father was of Swedish descent. The village was known as Anderson's Town and Andersonton before being formally organized as Anderson. Between the years of 1838 and 1865, the town experienced incorporated as a town, downgrading to a village, and reincorporating several times as the population ebbed and flowed. In 1865 the city was granted incorporation with a population of almost 1,300 people.
Natural gas was discovered in Anderson in March 1887. New businesses that could benefit from this moved into the city and Anderson grew substantially by both population and industry. By the late 19th century, the Indiana Gas Boom had allowed twenty industries of various sizes to establish profitable foundations in the city. In 1912 the natural gas ran out. Business slowed and factories moved on, leaving only those not dependent on Gas. The Ward-Stilson Company remained in Anderson and from 1913 through to the 1950’s was one of America’s largest producers of uniforms, regalia, furniture and props for the Freemasons, the Odd Fellows and many other U.S. fraternal organizations.
The Church of God of Anderson located its world headquarters in Anderson in 1905 and opened Anderson Bible School in 1917. The name was changed to Anderson College in 1925 and then to Anderson University in 1988, which it remains known as today. The city is also home to the Church of God headquarters.
History, Art and Culture flavour the city. The Anderson Centre for the arts displays a fine collection of contemporary visual art and holds educational programmes, workshops and art camps. The centre hosts many exhibits through the year ranging from Photography to Ceramics.
Other attractions in and around Anderson include the Anderson Symphony Orchestra, Anderson Young Ballet Theatre, Paramount Theatre, Anderson’s Main stage Theatre, Paramount Theatre, the Reardon Auditorium and the Edgewood, Grandview, Killbuck and Meadowbrook Golf Courses.
