Bloomington is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County in the state of Indiana. It is located 50 miles south of Indianapolis and about 83 miles north of the Indiana-Kentucky border.
Bloomington is situated in the rolling hills of southern Indiana in an area of irregular limestone terrain characterized by sinks, ravines, fissures, underground streams, sinking streams, springs and caves. Bloomington has been known as a Tree City for more than 20 years and is affectionately named B-Town by locals.

The majority of the buildings are constructed from Indiana limestone. Bloomington is also the home of the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University Maurer School of Law, the Jacobs School of Music, the Kelley School of Business, the Kinsey Institute, the Indiana University School of Optometry, and the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute.
Bloomington has a large music scene and is home to Plan-It-X Records, Eradicator Records, Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar and BlueSanct. The renowned Lotus Festival of World Music is held in Bloomington each fall.
Downtown Bloomington offers retail shops, a variety of restaurants and rich splashes of colour through the huge murals that were painted by local youth and artists.
The city hosts a diverse range of festivals throughout the year. The Little 500 is a bicycle race held at the Bill Armstrong Stadium on the Indiana University campus. The race began in 1951 by Howdy Wilcox Jr. and is the biggest intramural event on the IU campus and the largest collegiate bike race in the United States. Teams of four race relay-style for 50 miles raising money towards a scholarship fund for working IU students.
The Taste of Bloomington takes place in mid-June each year at Showers Common and is a collaboration of dozens of Bloomington's best restaurants, local wineries and breweries and live musical entertainers.
Other events include the Afro-American Art Festival, Chocolate Festival, Dark Carnival Film Festival, Fall Festival on Fairfax, Plan-It-X Fest, Fourth Street Arts and Crafts Festival, Indiana Heritage Quilt Show, Lotus World Music and Arts Festival, Pride Film Festival, Theta Antique Show, Bloomington Farmers Market and the Business EXPO.
