Columbus is a city in and the county seat of Bartholomew County in the state of Indiana. It is located approximately 40 miles) south of Indianapolis on the east fork of the White River. It is also the principal city of the Columbus, Indiana, metropolitan statistical area which encompasses all of Bartholomew County.
The land now known as Columbus was bought by General John Tipton and Luke Bonesteel in 1820. Tipton built a small residence and the settlement that then developed was named Tiptonia. In 1821 the town's name was officially was changed to Columbus and Tipton left town. In later years he later became the Highway Commissioner for the State of Indiana. When he was assigned to build a highway from Indianapolis to Louisville, Kentucky, he constructed the first ever bypass road, detouring south around the west side of Columbus on to Seymour. Columbus was incorporated as a city in 1864.
Columbus has the nickname Athens of the Prairie due to the beautiful architecture and sculptures in the city. Six buildings are listed on the National Historic Landmarks and about 60 other buildings are reputable representations of modern architecture.
The Crump Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Indiana. It was built in 1889 by John Crump and stands today as both an historical landmark and venue. Columbus was also home to one of the state’s oldest bookstores, Cummins Bookstore, however the store closed in late 2007.
Attractions in and around Columbus include the Elite Speed Skating Club, the First Baptist Church, Mabel McDowel School, Miller House, Columbus Architecture Tours, Commons, Mill Race Park, Millar House and Garden Tour and The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
