Elkhart is a city in Elkhart County in the state of Indiana. It is located 15 miles east of South Bend, 70 miles northwest of Fort Wayne and 110 miles east of Chicago on the northern edge of the state.

In 1831, Dr. Havilah Beardsley purchased one square mile of land in the area now known as Elkhart in order to establish a rival town to neighbouring village of Pulaski. The source of the city's name is disputed even today. Some believe that the city's Island Park looks like an elk's heart whilst others state the name was taken from Shawnee Indian Chief Elkhart, whose daughter Princess Mishawaka is the namesake of neighbouring Mishawaka City.

Elkhart Brass Manufacturing has been a foundation of the city’s industrial base since 1902. The company has become a global leader in the creation of innovative fire-fighting equipment. The two other main industries in Elkhart are recreational vehicles and musical instruments. For this reason the city has often been referred to as the "RV Capital of the World" and the "Band Instrument Capital of the World." Elkhart is also home to the hand-crafted Charles R. Walter Piano and Thor Motor Coach, the top retail seller of motorhomes manufactured in North America.

One of Elkhart’s most popular attractions is the newly renovated Lerner Theatre. It features seating for more than 1700, a movable stage, a state of the art video/audio system, a 50-foot screen and flexible space that can be used for wedding receptions, small productions, proms and meetings.

Other attractions in and around the city include the developing American Countryside theme park and farmers market, free water spray parks at NIBCO Parkway and McNaughton Park, many quality parks and facilities and the downtown river walk, which now features an ice-skating and roller-blading path.
