Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Putnam County in the state of Indiana. It is located about 48 miles west of Indianapolis, near Interstate 70 in the west-central part of the state.
Greencastle was founded in 1821 by Scots-Irish American Ephraim Dukes and named after his hometown in Pennsylvania. The village operated under authority of the Putnam County commissioners until it became a town in 1849. In 1861 Greencastle officially became a city and shortly thereafter the county seat of Putnam County.
Today the city is a gentle blend of modern facilities and small town natural scenery, surrounded by rich farm land full of outdoor recreational opportunities.
Greencastle is perhaps best known as home to the DePauw University. Founded in 1837 by the Methodist Church, the University aims to function with liberal principles, be accessible to all religious denominations, and benefit all of its citizens. DePauw University was the birthplace of the first sorority in the nation, Kappa Alpha Theta, established in 1870. The Alpha chapter of Alpha Chi Omega sorority was founded at DePauw and Indiana's first Phi Beta Kappa chapter is also located at DePauw. DePauw students founded Sigma Delta Chi which is known nationally today as The Society of Professional Journalists. The University was also the first in the country to host a 10-watt college FM radio station and has the oldest college newspaper in Indiana, the student-managed, award-winning” The DePauw.”
Attractions in and around the area include Putnam County Museum, Ward Melinda Theme Park, Old Hickory Golf Course, Korean and Vietnam War Memorial and the Green Castle Public Skate park.
