Indianapolis is a city in and the county seat of Marion County in the state of Indiana. It is also the state Capital. Indianapolis is the state’s largest city and one of the fastest growing regions in the country. The city is located on the original east-west National Road in the centre of the state.
The Madison and Indianapolis railroad began operating in the area now known as Indianapolis in 1847. Direct access in and out of the city enabled both rapid and extensive growth and by the turn of the century Indianapolis had become an established metropolitan with a strong economy based in automobile manufacturing.
In the 1980’s the city of Indianapolis redeveloped its downtown areas and the skyline was reformed by the first of many tall skyscrapers. 1982 saw the construction of the One America building and the Chase Tower was opened in 1990. Today Indianapolis is a major hub of regional transport, directly demonstrating the state nickname "The Crossroads of America." Indianapolis today has a diverse and rich economy ranging from fields of education and health care through to finance and tourism.
Indianapolis hosts numerous conventions and sporting events throughout the year including the annual Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments. In 2012 Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl for the first time at Lucas Oil Stadium in Downtown Indianapolis.
The city has the second highest number of monuments in the country, after Washington, D.C. These include the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, Medal of Honour Memorial, USS Indianapolis Memorial, Landmark for Peace Memorial and the more recent addition Project 9/11 Indianapolis. The city’s five downtown Cultural Districts are connected by a series of walking and cycling pathways that feature local art work, called the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
Other attractions in and around Indianapolis include Crown Hill Cemetery, James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home, Indianapolis City Market and Obelisk Square. Festivals include the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Broad Ripple Art Fair, 500 Festival, Talbot Street Art Fair, Carmel Arts Festival, Indian Market and Festival, Indiana State Fair, Indy Jazz Fest, and the DCI World Championships.
