Kokomo is a city in and the county seat of Howard County in the state of Indiana. It is the principal city of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Howard and Tipton counties. Kokomo is located about 1 hours’ drive north of the state capital Indianapolis in the centre of the state.

David Foster founded the first trading post in Howard County in the early 19th century and subsequently donated 40 acres of his land to create a county seat in Kokomo. In 1865 it was incorporated as a city and named after a local legend Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo, which is sometimes spelled as "Koh-Koh-Mah" or "Kokomoko".

Kokomo is officially known as the "City of Firsts." Natural gas was discovered in Kokomo in 1886 during the Indiana Gas Boom, which was the stigma that attracted Elwood Haynes' move to Kokomo with his gas company. Haynes was a pioneer of United States automobile manufacturing, test-driving his early internal combustion engine here in 1894. The Haynes-Apperson Automobile Company for mass-production of commercial autos was established in Kokomo in 1898 and Haynes went on to invent Stainless Steel flatware in 1912 to give his wife tarnish-free dinnerware.

Other firsts in Kokomo were the first push button car radio, developed by the Delco Radio Division of General Motors, the first canned tomato juice by the Kemp Brothers Canning Co, the first mechanical corn picker developed by John Powell, the first Ponderosa Steakhouse and the first McDonald's with a diner inside.

Attractions in and around Kokomo include the Vermont Covered Bridge, Chief Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo Burial and Monument, Elwood Haynes Museum, Foster Park, Kokomo Performing Arts Pavilion, Highland Park, Elwood Haynes Museum, Darrough Chapel Peace Garden, Jackson Morrow Park, Kokomo Beach Family Aquatic Centre and the City of Firsts Automotive Heritage Museum.

Festivals include the Kokomo Rib Fest, City of Firsts Soapbox Derby, Haynes-Apperson Festival, Howard County 4-H Fair, Oktober Fest and the New Year’s Ball Drop.
