La Porte is a city in and the county seat of La Porte County in the state of Indiana. It is one of the two principal cities of the Michigan City-La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin Combined Statistical Area. La Porte is located in northwest Indiana, east of Gary, and west of South Bend in the north-western part of the state below Lake Michigan.

La Porte was first settled in 1832. The first of many sawmills was erected that same year creating the need for permanent workers and provisions to be established. In only three short years, the settlement had grown remarkably and was incorporated as a town. The La Porte Medical School was founded in 1842 and former graduate William Worrall Mayo went on to establish the famed Mayo Clinic in Minnesota in 1889.

The city granted a city charter in 1852 and its increased size attracted numerous diverse industries. One of these was the Advance-Rumely company which developed the Oil-Pull tractor engine. Local resident Sebastian Lay had planted maple trees along both Indiana and Michigan avenues in the early 1950s and the city took on the nickname of the 'Maple City'. This area today comprises of a historic district made up of homes and structures of architectural and historical interest. The courthouse of La Porte is built of red sandstone from Lake Superior and is considered to be one of the city’s best known structures.

La Porte offers an array of attractions including the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa, Washington Park, LaPorte County Historical Society Museum, Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, Shady Creek Winery and the Lubeznik Centre For The Arts.
