Lafayette is a city in and the county seat of Tippecanoe County in the state of Indiana. Together, Lafayette and West Lafayette form the core of the Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is located on the Wabash River 63 miles northwest of Indianapolis and about 94 miles south of Gary and Lake Michigan.

The town of Lafayette was platted in May 1825 by a river trader William Digby and like many frontier towns was named in honour of a French soldier who significantly aided George Washington's Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, General Lafayette. Both the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 1840s and the arrival of the railroads in the 1850s enhanced Lafayette’s popularity by connecting the area to various parts of the state and promising new enterprises in academic and industrial activities.

Today the Purdue University sits in West Lafayette and plays a major financial role in both communities. The University employs the largest portion of the Lafayette workforce and is a drawing card to both tourists and potential residents. Other notable employers include Alcoa, Caterpillar, Wabash National, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Rea Magnet Wire and the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Attractions in and around the city include the SIA Playground, Park and Wallace Avenues, Tippecanoe Golf Club, Riverside Skating Centre, Columbian Park Zoo, Tropicanoe Cove and Wolf Park in Battle Ground.

Lafayette is well known for its festivals, the largest being a re-creation of an 18th Century French and Indian trading post on the banks of the Wabash River called the Feast of the Hunter’s Moon. The celebrations are adorned with Eighteenth century music, crafts, dance and recreated period foods. Other festivals include Taste of Tippecanoe, Indiana Fiddlers’ Gathering and the Lay Flats Arts and Music Festival.
