Merrillville is a town in Ross Township, Lake County in the state of Indiana. It is located 8 miles south of Gary and about 44 miles south-east of Chicago in the most north-western part of the state.

Merrillville was originally named Wiggins Point after its first permanent settler in 1835, Jeremiah Wiggins. The place became a popular stop for wagon trains heading to Joliet, Illinois along the old Sauk Trail. Locals renamed the village Merrillville after Wiggins passing in 1838. At that time the brothers Dudley and William Merrill were significant town figures, Dudley Merrill running the hotel and store and his son John P. Merrill being a Township Trustee. Merrillville joined with several other surrounding new settlements in 1848 to form the Ross Township and in 1971 Merrillville was incorporated as a town.

Merrillville today is a retail hub for Northwest Indiana. It is home to one of the largest shopping malls in Indiana, Westfield Southlake. This massive establishment offers movie theatres, banks, fast food and restaurants and a plethora of retail shops including Carson Pirie Scott, JCPenney, Macy's, Books-A-Million, Dick's Sporting Goods and Sears.

Chicagoland's Largest Water Park is located in Merrillville. Deep River Waterpark includes a variety of attractions catered to meet the demands of every kind of water lover. Easy flowing rivers and zero depth children’s pool are interspersed between speed slides, adventures pools and a large range of eateries. There is even an outdoor ice plaza for winter use.

Other attractions in and around Merrillville include the Merrillville Community Planetarium, Turkey Creek Golf Course, Lake County Historical Society and Museum and Southland Mall.
