Mishawaka is a city in St. Joseph County in the state of Indiana. It is located on the St. Joseph River about 85 miles north-west of Fort Wayne and 6 miles east of its twin city, South Bend. Mishawaka is also the principal city of the South Bend–Mishawaka, IN-MI, Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The discovery of bog iron deposits brought settlers to the area now known as Mishawaka in the 1830s. Within a few short years a small but thriving community developed consisting of a blast furnace, stores, a tavern and a few hundred residents. In 1833, the St. Joseph Iron Works, Indiana City, and two other adjacent small towns were incorporated to form the city of Mishawaka. The area's rich black loam produced great quantities of mint and through the late 19th Century the city was nicknamed the "Peppermint Capital of the World". A strong manufacturing economy developed through the first half of the 20th century, with Mishawaka being home to the manufacturing facilities of the luxurious American Simplex motor car. The Manufacturing base slowly shifted to retail services and small industry and in 1979, University Park Mall opened north of Mishawaka.
