Portage is a city in Portage Township, Porter County in the state of Indiana. It is located 10 miles east of Gary and 20 miles south-west of Michigan City. It is the largest city in Porter County, and third largest in Northwest Indiana. Portage Portage Township was originally a farming community until railroad development began in the 1850s and 1860s. The railways enabled farmers to ship livestock, dairy and crops to nearby Chicago. An influx of new residents moved to Portage post-war seeking the steady salaries available in the local steel mills and related industries. A few short years saw the arrival of the National Steel plant along the shore of Lake Michigan, the Port of Indiana Mill and the Bethlehem Steel. The development of these new plants brought with them thousands of job opportunities and subsequently the area boomed. Portage officially became a city in 1967. Portage Portage is home of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on the south shore of Lake Michigan and West Beach. Robbins Pond is a popular spot for fishing offering largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and bullhead catfish and is home to many turtles including snapping turtles. Other parks in the area include the Imagination Glen Park, Woodland Park, Lakefront and Riverfwalk, Wolfe Park, Harbour Oaks Park and Olson Memorial Park. Portage The Brauer Museum of Art displays more than 2,300 works of art including paintings, prints, photography, sculpture and international religious art. It is situated in the Centre for the Arts on the Valparaiso University campus. Highlighted pieces include work from Frederic Edwin Church, Asher B. Durand, Childe Hassam, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Junius R. Sloan. As well as displaying its permanent collection, the Brauer Museum presentations short-term exhibitions, provides education classes and hosts special events.
