Richmond is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County in the state of Indiana. It is located 73 miles east of Indianapolis on the central eastern edge of the state.
In 1806, the first European Americans to travel from North Carolina to settle in the area now known as Richmond were Quaker families. They set up a small village along the East Fork of the Whitewater River. The city was then connected to the National Road, making it part of the system of National Auto Trails and permitting an influx of new residents and business opportunities. The highway is now known as U.S. Highway 40. Richmond is still home to several Quaker institutions, including Friends United Meeting, Earlham College and the Earlham School of Religion.
Richmond today shines with rich architectural heritage, notably the 1902 Pennsylvania Railroad Station designed by Daniel Burnham of Chicago and the 1893 Wayne County Court House designed by James W. McLaughlin of Cincinnati.
The city is often referred to by one of two nicknames. The first is the "Rose City" and echoes a past rich with many rose varieties grown by Hill's Roses. Each year the Richmond Rose Festival honours the rose industry through music, food, floral displays and competitions. The second name given is the "cradle of recorded jazz". This name remains from when early jazz records were made at Gennett Records studios in Richmond.
The Hayes Arboretum is an educational organisation that is open free of charge to the public, providing quality resource information about regional plants, wildlife, and other nature related topics. A variety of plant collections, rock and fossil collections, hiking and running paths and social scenic places spread across 466 acres of Richmond.
Other attractions include the Hayes Arboretum, Wayne County Historical Museum, Richmond Art Museum, Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Richmond Civic Theatre, Joseph Moore Museum, Old Richmond Historic District, Starr Historic District, Bethel AME Church , Old National Road Welcome Centre, Whitewater Gorge Park and the Gennett Walk of Fame.
