South Bend is a city in and the county seat of St. Joseph County in the state of Indiana. It is located on the St. Joseph River just south of the Indiana/ Michigan border.

The area was originally settled in the early 18th century by fur traders who immediately took advantage of the transportation benefits of the river. South Bend's development centred on heavy industrial development and large manufacturers quickly set up permanent facilities. These included the Studebaker and Oliver Chilled Plow Companies. The city became established in 1865.

Large corporations remain today such as Crowe Horwath, Honeywell, and AM General, however the economy has diversified through the years and now includes the fields of health care, education, small business, and tourism. South Bend is the economic and cultural hub of the Michiana region and home to the University of Notre Dame, which is the largest employer in St. Joseph County.

The Potawatomi Zoo is the oldest zoo in Indiana, first opening in 1902. This exquisite tourist attraction features over 400 animals across 23 acres. A variety of animal encounters, education programs and family based events are offered year round. Situated close by the Zoo are the Potawatomi Greenhouses and Ella Morris and Muessel-Ellison Botanical Conservatories. The Conservatories display a variety of flora from tropical plants and citrus trees to a small waterfall surrounded by bougainvillea and bird of paradise. This lush settling hosts wedding ceremonies, receptions, recitals, showers and meetings.

Attractions in and around the city include the South Bend Museum of Art, Studebaker National Museum, The Museums at Washington and Chapin, Tippecanoe Place, The Morris Performing Arts Centre, The Fischoff National Chamber Music Association, Healthworks!
