Valparaiso is a city in and the county seat of Porter County in the state of Indiana. It is located 24 miles south-east of Gary and about 150 miles north of Indianapolis close to the northern state border.

The first log cabin erected in the area now known as Valparaiso was built in 1834 on the Indian trail between Rock Island and Detroit. Two years later the settlement was established as Portersville and given the county seat of Porter County. In 1837 it was renamed Valparaiso after the Spanish word meaning "Valley of Paradise". By the end of the 19th Century the city was home to a large number of churches and was often referred to as the "City of Churches".

Railroads and major highways linked the city directly into Chicago by 1858, aiding in both city population and national business growth. Today Valparaiso is seen as a travel hub for the region. Its ideal location allows visitors and residents easy access to a plethora of local natural attractions. Lake Michigan is only a half hours drive away offering swimming, boating, fishing and lakeside recreation. The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is open year-round displaying stunning flora and fauna across breath taking trails. The dunes waterfront is also popular for water sports and camping.

Other tourist attractions in and around the city include the Brauer Museum of Art, Indiana Aviation Museum, Porter County Museum and the Taltree Arboretum and Gardens.
