It was 1848 that saw Captain Justice Bailey looking for shelter from a severe storm on Lake Michigan that lead him to take refuge in a harbor, that today bears his name. The following morning after the storm had passed is when Captain Bailey noticed the nature lime stone and the abundance of timber, he prepared a map of the harbor to take back along with specimens of Pine, Maple and Beech and the stone. It was the following year that his employer sent a crew of men to build a pier, a saw mill at the harbor and to open a stone quarry, Baileys Harbor was the first County seat in Door County.
