In mid 1997 the ageing terminal was modernized and upgraded with five new gates and the access to has highway was completely reconstructed to help improve the flow of traffic in and out of the teminals. There are master plans again to relocate the main terminal to a central location on the airport site to further improve services and accessability. The airport currently serves the cities of Stevens Point, Wausau, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, some of the tourism communities in northern Wisconsin and the smaller exurbs of Hatley, Bevent, Rosholt, and Five Corners.
